"Location has energy, and time has memory." — Jay Shetty
An altar is more than decor....it's a doorway to your inner world. Over time, this sacred space becomes infused with the energy of your prayers, meditations, and intentions. Each time you pass by or sit before it, you receive what you've cultivated there.
Why Create an Altar?
Your altar serves as an anchor point throughout your day, calling you back to presence, peace, and connection. It doesn't need to be elaborate. Mine sits simply on my porch: a yoga mat, candle, gratitude journal, and a meaningful book. What matters is that it helps you turn inward.
What to Include
The Essentials
A candle (fire and light)
Fresh flowers or a plant (earth and water)
A cushion or mat (your foundation)
Personal Touches
Sacred texts or books that inspire you
A journal and pen for reflection
Mala beads or prayer beads
Photos of loved ones, or ancestors
Oracle cards or meaningful art
Statues or images representing qualities you wish to embody
Sensory Elements
Incense or essential oils (scent)
A small bell or singing bowl (sound)
Beautiful objects that bring you joy (sight)
Soft textures like a shawl or blanket (touch)
Creating Your Practice
Let your altar reflect what calls to you. There's no right way....only your way. Feed it with your presence through prayer, meditation, journaling, or simply sitting in stillness. As you return again and again, you'll find that the space holds you as much as you hold it.
The sacred around you reflects the sacred within. Let your altar be a daily reminder of who you're becoming.
What will you place on your altar? Start simple, stay curious, and let it evolve with you.
